TIXMXW7 LFDS Disable Patch Information
I. What Does the Patch Do?
The Large File Dataset or
LFDS feature delivered with TurboIMAGE versions C.10.03 through C.10.09 had some potential data
corruption issues. If you are currently using the C.10.xx version, you could run into
these issues if you created any extremely large datasets. To avoid these issues, HP has created a new patch TIXMXW7
which delivers TurboIMAGE version C.10.10 and includes the following changes.
- Disallow creation of new LFDS database on C.10.xx:
This patch will not allow you to create any new LFDS database. DBSCHEMA will
display the following error message when you try to create a LFDS database.
"CREATION OF LFDS NOT ALLOWED"
-
Disable/Enable WRITE access to existing LFDS databases
The
LFDS Detection Tool will be part of this C.10.xx disable patch. The tool runs as
part of the post-install patch job. This tool will scan through the system to
find any existing LFDS databases and give recommendations on the steps needed to
be taken. See the LFDS Detection Tool Usage and
Download page for details.
If no LFDS databases are found on the system, the tool will create the HPNOLFDS.PUB.SYS
file. DBOPEN will check for the existence of this file and disable write access
to any LFDS database if such a file exists. This is to prevent the possibility
of any issues on LFDS databases being imported or restored onto this system in
the
future. After the file HPNOLFDS.PUB.SYS is created, if you try to open any LFDS
database with WRITE mode, you will get the following error message:
“Can’t open LFDS database in WRITE mode. Open in READ only mode.”
If one or more LFDS databases are on the system no file (HPNOLFDS.PUB.SYS) will
be created and then WRITE access will not be disabled. Thus access to existing
LFDS databases that are present on the system at patch installation time will
not be impacted. These pre-existing LFDS databases will need to be converted to
Jumbo databases at the user’s earliest convenience.
-
Avoid wastage of space during DB creation
This is not really part of LFDS disablement but an ancillary change that rolled
into this version of DBSCHEMA.
If you explicitly specify a blocking factor, you may unwittingly waste space for
the database. With our new code, DBSCHEMA will calculate the optimal
blocking factor and display that, for example:
E.g. Capacity: 10000000(2);
*** NOTE: with blocking factor equal to 3, you can save 33% of disc space.
The blocking factor that you specify will always be used. If you prefer to use
the optimal blocking factor given in the advisory message you will need to
modify your schema removing the explicit blocking factor allowing DBSCHEMA to
make the choice or specify the recommended blocking factor as given in the
advisory message.
II. Who Should Install It?
If you are running on a C.10 based version of TurboIMAGE, HP recommends that you
install patch TIXMXW7. After installing this patch, the LFDS Detection Tool will
automatically be run, giving you a report on any databases which have a
potential for experiencing the LFDS issue. If any at-risk databases are found, instructions will be
given for converting those LFDS databases to Jumbo databases.
III. Where to Get the Patch
The latest general release TurboIMAGE patch may be ordered or
downloaded from
Hewlett-Packard's
IT Resource Center.
IV. Alternative to TIXMXW7 for those customers without HP
Support
HP is also offering the version of DBSCHEMA that comes with the TIXMXW7 (or
superseding) patch as an independent download. Using this version of DBSCHEMA
will ensure that you can not accidentally create an LFDS capable database on
C.10.xx.
We are also offering the LFDS Detection tool for download. Please see the
following pages for complete details:
